Get somewhere with SumWare -
remotely
Last month, we took a pot-shot at handheld PCs. But here's a
handheld solution that makes sense to many businesses - and an
innovative approach to deployment and pricing. SumWare Mobile
Data Corporation of Toronto provides software for the Palm OS
platform, as a two-tier application:

SumWare REMOTE is a
Palm based program that supports Customer and Inventory Lookup,
full Order-entry, Inventory Control, and Sales Force Automation.

SumWare REMOTE
Control is the desktop middleware product that manages the data
flow between the handheld, the Windows PC and the accounting /
inventory control system (such as Blue Link Solutions).
REMOTE
features the ability to instantly scan barcodes, access product
(up to 65,000 items) and customer information, create multiple
open orders, print invoices, quotes, or orders, POS with payment
entry option (cash, check, or charge). The application will run
on any Palm OS handheld (including Handspring units).
REMOTE Control is the Windows desktop
component that downloads and uploads data to and from the
handheld system. The HotSync utility of the Palm operating
platform permits the rapid transfer of data to the remote system
as required. This program acts as a repository for the data
gathered by the handheld, allowing immediate retrieval of any
order/invoice/quote that has been downloaded.
REMOTE Control can stand-alone or more usually will act as a
conduit to the host accounting system by importing and exporting
flat (ASCII) files.
REMOTE Control will interface
seamlessly with Blue Link Solutions (Professional and Elite).
SumWare has adopted an innovative approach to
pricing, and typically rents the software on a monthly rental
basis, using a sliding scale based on the number of handheld
units licensed. The rental fees include support and software
updates.

PowerPoint XP Tip
Write on your slides
You're running a PowerPoint slide show for an
audience and want to draw their attention to something on a slide,
perhaps in response to a question. Here's a great way of doing just
that:

click the right mouse button (while in Slide Show
view)
-
select "Pointer Options", then select "Pen"
-
your mouse pointer now looks like a pen, and you
can draw / write anywhere on the slide - circle specific items,
underline, whatever
-
you may also change the pen colour - right-click,
select "Pointer Options", then "Pen Color"
Note that all your pen markings are lost when
you leave the slide. If you want to record permanent notes for future
reference, you may want to use Speaker Notes (from the right-click
menu).
